He is a bold-decision maker, risk taker right from a very young age. When most people in the era think about making a secure job in a government with a minimum education required, Guru fights against the will of his father to start working in a far off land Turkey. From there starts the journey of Gurukanth Desai to Guru Bhai, from rages to riches, from a village to a big city and very truly, from a human to a visionary – fulfilling the dreams of thousands of people including him selves.

The fantastic thing about the movie is Manirathnam for sure. The story and screenplay are so good that you hardly notice the story moving away from the main path towards the end. The screen play is next top perfect with each character properly laid from their start to their end keeping in mind the progress they make in the story of the film while adding to it. Guru is among Mani’s better works for sure. Though you could wonder, why he hasn’t shown the negative shades of Guru’s character more prominently on screen, with the final output he has given, you actually give it loose eye.

As always Manirathnam-Rahman’s chemistry does wonders on the screen. The duo makes some trend setting films together and Guru stands out in them in recent past. Background score is beautifully done. Two of the songs – Jaage Hein and Ay Hairathe – are used as a back ground songs. Jaage Hein acts as the glue holding all the film together. Most of the songs take the story forward except for Ek lo Ek Muft. This number sung by Bappi Lahari and Chitra ji , in fact, downs the temp a bit. But having said that, the script is so well supported by the characters you can hardly notice it.

The peculiar characteristic of Mani’s characterization is the ability that he provides for actors to perform and excel in their roles. Each of the actors have been rightly chosen fitting into the character visualized. Mithun Chakraborty’s character of an honest editor bent to show-case truth and only truth to the public is very good. And Mithun gives a very good performance far way better than his previously when-did-it-release movie with Rahul Khanna and gang. Notable performances by Madhavan (as a reporter dead against the way things Gurukanth does) and Aishwarya Rai (as the wife of Guru) add to the screenplays presentation on the screen. Vidya Balan bags another good role, though the character could have been given more strength. Mallika sizzles, oozes beauty in her own way – That’s the usual Mallika for us!

And finally Abhishek Bachaan. His previous work with Mani – Yuva – was addressed as his best performance then. And Guru is going to cross that barrier by a huge margin. He literally brings live the character with his gestures and the honesty. Dawning a role that spans about 30 years is not easy for an actor. Abhishek shows he has grown out of the shoes of his father to stand on his own feet and perform such difficult task with ease and in such a way that you might actually wonder if it’s a completely Abhishek’s signature movie and not Mani’s. Such is the versatility shown by Abhishek and Guru is definitely going to be a great performances among the movies he has done till now and he would do in future.

Guru should stand out among the Indian films recently for the obvious reasons – Mani’s amazing work, Abhishek extra-ordinary performance and Rahman’s magic. Guru is a phenomenon. Through its message – Dream and Dream big, do everything to achieve it - hopefully it brings more good directors/story writers not necessarily of Mani’s caliber to the Indian cinema.

Fahrenheit 9/11

It’s more of a documentary than movie that shows the possible motives of Bush administration to help Bush pockets get fatter from the aftermaths of the sad day 9/11. To showcase such prolific, defaming material and comments against the No.1 in the No.1 country of the world needs a great deal of courage. Michael Moore seems to have a great deal of it - contacting the senators to get one of their children sent to help the army people in Iraq, was a pretty good idea. He lays down his facts very nicely in the start of the movie, with details of Bush's adventures in businesses and his interest. And the way he links his interpretations of the way Bush has acted in the way he has leads the audience think that Bush has started this major human massacre without much thought of the Magnus job he has taken on.

The documentary sounded a lot near to the truth. But truth is to be left to the decision of the people and not to be rubbed on to the minds. Mr. Moore shows only one angle of the story – his brutal hatred towards anything that’s Bush related even minutely. Had he show cased a little bit of the other angle, Fahrenheit could have been even more interesting. But given the burning importance of the issue he is dealing and his own pre-conceived, loath-Bush thoughts, it could have been difficult even to ‘think’ on the other angle.

So what’s this whole “Hunt Osama – Kill Saddam” about – Let live people with freedom? I definitely don’t think so. Death of innocent people is inevitable in any war, but to such huge numbers and remember, the numbers are increasing every day. These huge death tolls don’t answer any kind of reasoning behind for that stupid decision to declare War on Iraq. If that’s the way even democratic nations is going to work – Stronger Bullies the Weaker - with little protest from weaker countries, there needs to be the formation of a stronger consortium to guide the interests of humanity in general and peace in people lives in particular.

We The People - Godmen and their miracles (Part 3)

Letter to Swami Agnivesh
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

21 December 2006
Dear Miss Dutt,

Please forward the following email to Swami Agnivesh as I don't know how to reach him. Thank you. Karuna Sarup-Munshi
Revered Swami Agnivesh,
Pranaams and Namaskar! My name is Karuna Sarup-Munshi and I am a graduate of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Anantapur Campus in Andhra Pradesh. I studied in Sri Sathya Sai Baba's university for six years, from 1980-1986. I consider that period as the golden period of my life as it accounted most significantly towards my spiritual growth and development.

As Baba's students, I was encouraged to read biographies of great leaders, especially those of who represent India's great spiritual heritage. Till date, I have the highest respect for the spiritual scientists of India, its sages and seers. Hence, I was terribly disappointed by what you said on Barkha Dutta's show recently with regards to the Chancellor of my university, my best friend and role model, Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

While you were willing to let Sai Baba be because he provides clean water to millions, you urged him to:
1) Stop preying on innocent, gullible people
2) Stop the abuse, because a teary-eyed Australian approached you for help
3) Initiate social reforms on such issues as women's empowerment

With all due respect and in the spirit of Sanathan Dharma, Swamiji, may I request that you enquire well before making such serious allegations against anyone, be it Sai Baba or someone else, unless you have tangible proof. We do great disservice to the hoary traditions we claim to represent when we freely criticise and condemn someone using a powerful medium without first checking our facts. If the true ornament of the tongue is truth, then perhaps we should seek the truth of the matter before drawing any conclusions in haste and misinforming others.

With regards to your first allegation, we are all drawn to him because of the power of his love and selflessness. To us, Baba exemplifies everything positive and good in human nature. He inspires us to strive to be good human beings who are caring and selfless, just like him and we express our devotion to him by serving our fellow beings in our local communities in numerous ways. Should you wish to know about the many service projects we the devotees of Sai Baba undertake around the globe, please feel free to contact us, real people with real names, faces and real addresses. Meanwhile, you may be pleased to learn that the greatest gift that Sai Baba has conferred upon us is our self-confidence. None of us are or have ever been gullibly preyed upon in any manner whatsoever. In fact he discourages gullibility and reminds us to think for ourselves and use our power of discrimination. Baba does not use any force to draw us to himself and nor does he enslave us emotionally or spiritually. He urges each of us to pursue our own faith, with deeper devotion, and urges us to love everyone without prejudice. What, may I ask, is wrong with that?

Swamiji, your acquaintance in Adelaide, Australia should have filed a lawsuit and produced some evidence before you chose to quote him and generalize his allegations so flippantly, to freely defame Sri Sathya Sai Baba to millions of viewers on TV with scant regard to the truth. Besides, I am curious to know, how exactly did you help this forlorn soul who came to you for counsel? Anything more substantial than repeated a hearsay charge on television as the ultimate truth would have been a more responsible way to deal with it, I would think.

Finally, I am happy to inform you that in the 1960's when Baba began setting up institutes of higher learning that would combine academic excellence with character education, the first college he set up was exclusively for women at Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.

To a former student of that college, a mother, a professional and intelligent person like me, Sai Baba is the greatest advocate of women's rights and the greatest feminist on the face of earth. He has taken the women's empowerment to his logical and spiritual conclusion by reminding us that in the entire creation, humanity is the most superior and among human beings, women represent the epitome of God's creation. He has made women realize that they should not merely seek mental, emotional, physical or financial freedom but assert their true nature by identifying with the atma. This awareness of our atmic freedom is his greatest gift to women. The Sai community celebrates November 19 as Women's Day world-wide and also the 19 th of every month. Baba's teachings speak of oneness and unity, not dividing society on basis of class, culture, or any such barriers. How I wish you had checked your facts!

Swamiji, as Baba's student and hence his daughter, I will be more than happy to answer any of your questions or address your concerns regarding the purity and sacredness that is associated with my teacher, guide and role model Sri Sathya Sai Baba. His life has inspired millions of us to live more meaningful and purpose-driven lives wherever we are. My children represent the 4 th generation devotees of Baba in our family and we speak purely from our experiences, not hearsay and I am sure you will agree that first-hand experiences counts more than the juicy gossip one may catch from the grapevine.

Swamiji, if you are visiting Canada, please know that you are most welcome to our home. We will be delighted to answer your questions and share our feelings with you. Better still, why don't you visit Prashanti Nilayam for yourself and separate the facts from the myths?

That which is true will survive any blasphemy, lies, canard and slander. That which is untrue will never pass the test of time. Who knows this better than a spiritual seeker such as yourself? While some people will continue to spend their time, energy and resources to malign Sri Sathya Sai Baba, his glory continues to spread globally and crores, not lakhs, of people continue to be drawn to Baba because of the power of his personal example and message.

With Regards, and Namaskar!
Karuna Sarup-Munshi
103 Golden Tulip Crescent
Markham, Ontario
Canada L6C 1W4
Tel: (905) 887 2430
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We The People - Godmen and their miracles (Part 2)

I think these views are very valid and needs widespread publicity.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------December 4, 2006
Dear Ms. Dutt,

I watched your show "We the People" regarding Godmen and their miracles with keen interest because it purported to demystify, among others, Sri Sathya Sai Baba, my personal hero and role model. While I appreciate your efforts to allow both sides to have a voice on the show, I feel compelled to point out a few glaring inaccuracies featured on the show. A number of derogatory statements were made on the show about Sri Sathya Sai Baba that were factually inaccurate.

For starters, Baba's mission is to empower humanity, by reminding us that each of us is a bundle of infinite possibilities—that each of us is verily God. People misquote him when they say that Baba claims to be God. What Baba does say is that he is God as much as each and every one of us is God, the only difference being that most of us are not aware of our divinity. In no way does he prey on anyone, only infuses self-confidence and optimism.

Secondly, all the money that devotees contribute to the Sai Trust is utilized for providing free education (Kindergarten to PhD levels), free super-specialized health-care and clean drinking water, among other services. It is channelled to bring relief to those whom our governments have failed to assist. The education is of a world-class standard and combines academic excellence with character education. I should know. Nine members of my family over two generations have been or are being educated at his schools and colleges. My son is currently attending Grade 1 at his school here in Toronto. The only words to describe our experiences with Sai Baba are pure, sacred, inspiring, peaceful and divinely loving. Next time you have a question regarding Sai Baba, I suggest you feel free to contact any of us as we are real people, with names, faces and addresses and have had direct experiences with him, unlike the handful of anonymous people running websites to defame Swami. A bit of investigation shows that although they claim that they have hundreds of supporters, some of them have never even met Baba and other names are hoaxes. We, his students are not nameless, faceless unidentifiable nobodies; why not ask us?

Baba inspires millions around the globe to lead purpose-driven lives by practicing the five universal values of Truth, Peace, Love, Right Conduct and Non-violence. That is why people of all major faiths and culture are drawn to him. If someone has a problem with such a great teacher and his gospel of universal acceptance, I think they need serious psychological help. I wish them well.

Miracles—the topic of hot discussion on your show –can be discussed ad-nauseam without arriving at a conclusion. It is indeed a matter of faith and personal belief but let me tell you what Sai Baba's greatest miracle has been to date -- the transformation of millions of hearts around the globe. He has reached out to and touched lives in places far and near Puttaparthi and transformed crores, not lakhs of persons to practice more truth, peace, love, right conduct and non-violence in their daily lives. Only a genuine practitioner of such a noble and virtuous path can inspire others including highly educated, successful and intelligent people from a variety of cultural, religious and professional backgrounds. To my knowledge, no magician, has been able to achieve that.

Baba has taught his followers to live beyond the tight cocoon of their self interest and see others, especially those in need, as an extension of themselves. He says "The hands that help are holier than the lips that pray". He also reminds us all the time to "Help Ever, Hurt Never" and "Love All, Serve All." If promoting such broadmindedness and civic-consciousness is wrong, I wonder then what is right?

The other main issue that your show highlighted was alleged abuse. I am sure that an intelligent journalist like you will agree that if there was any iota of truth in any of the allegations, someone somewhere would have filed a lawsuit and produced evidence supporting it in the world. Faceless, fictitious and nameless individuals who are using the internet as their platform to make allegations are disgruntled and unhappy people. All the websites have their source in just two individuals – an Australian professor connected with an anti-Semitic institute and his other friend who used who runs a fundamentalist group for a major faith group with strong monetary muscle.

Historically, whenever a prophet or a divine being guides humanity on the right path, there are those who find it so hard to accept that they are not the sole proprietors of the Truth that they vilify Him. Such was the fate of Lord Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and others. Sri Sathya Sai Baba, being a personification of Truth and Love is no exception. In some way or the other, those opposed to the message of Truth try to character assassinate or simply crucify the messengers. Such is their level of opposition to the Truth. They just can't handle it with their closed hearts and minds.

Baba's message of universal love and the Brotherhood of Humanity and the Fatherhood of God is a unifying message. There are some groups, might I add powerful and moneyed, that prey on human weaknesses and zealously attempt to divide humanity into different groups and classes. They believe in their way or the highway. They suffer from what may be described as a superiority complex in the spiritual sense. Such groups feel threatened by this little brown person, who sitting in a remote corner of Southern India is having such a liberating and uniting effect on millions world-wide. People who failed to find answers in their traditional faiths are finding that with Baba's guidance and in light of His teachings, they are developing a keener and deeper understanding of their own faith. They are able to rise above the literal translation of their scriptures and experience the cosmic understanding. They begin to experience the oneness of mankind. This threatens the powers that operate on the premise that some humans are created more equal than others and have special passes to win the grace and love of God. These powers insist on only specific routes to liberation. Baba says there are as many paths to divinity as there are human hearts. He insists everyone has equal chances of realizing their innate divinity if they practice the five human values of Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love and Non-violence. He says He is here not to start a new faith, but only to urge a Christian to be a true Christian, a Moslem to be true to his faith in Islam and a Buddhist to be true to the teachings of Buddha and so on. At the level of ethics, Baba points out that all faiths simply tell us to be good human beings - loving, kind, forgiving and compassionate. So look past the superficial name tags and recognize the oneness of the life force that runs through all diversity. This powerful and piercing insight that He provides freely to all is what is threatening many who fear losing their congregations to this Messiah of the New Age.

Normally, I would not even bother to write to the media, because I know the game as well as anyone else. What drives such stories is the bottom line not always a desire to get to the bottom of the story. However, since I noticed some effort on your part to include the viewpoint of those of us who revere him, I took the time to express myself.

In the spirit of fair journalism, I urge you to visit Prashanthi Nilayam and enquire first hand what draws millions to Baba and seek to understand the vision of his mission with an open mind. Trust me, no one will attempt to convert you to any "ism" there. It never happens.

If you ever need any other information, feel free to contact us. We are real people, with real experiences with Baba, over 4 generations covering my grand-parents, parents, our family, including our children.

As a former student of Sri Sathya Sai Baba's University, I was blessed to study in Anantapur, India for 6 years (1980-86). More recently, my daughter studied in Baba's elementary school in Puttaparthi for 5 years (1996-2001). In my immediate family, eight of us studied in various Sai educational institutes in Puttaparthi and nearby Anantapur. Over our combined 36 years of stay near Baba, what we have experienced is nothing but pure and divine love, unsullied by anything associated with worldly love. Very weakly, it can be described as the love of a thousand parents that we received from Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

Each of us can vouch with utmost confidence and conviction that Sri Sathya Sai Baba is a sacred master, who is an incarnation of purity and divine love. I am sure you will agree that for my siblings and I (former Sai students), to allow our young children to study in his elementary school, we must have a strong sense of confidence in the pure and safe environment of the holy land of Puttaparthi.

Do I need to defend him? No! The sun does not need for anyone to announce its rise every morning. The midday sun fills us with its golden light and warmth, yet someone who does not possess the capacity to experience it can deny the very existence of the planet. Only a clean piece of iron attracts a magnet. One that is covered with rust and dirt is not drawn to it. So too only a pure and spiritually ripe individual can experience Baba's divinity. Not everyone is that fortunate.

I wish the media would not slant everything into a sensational controversy and occasionally use this powerful tool to highlight something inspiring, sublime and reassuring such as selflessness and altruism. Apart from 3 Sai devotees -- a pilot named Mr. Manvendra Singh, Gen. Chibber and Justice Bhagwati, there were all sorts of people there, criticising and lying about Swami including Swami Agnivesh, a well-known Indian social activist and head of Arya Samaj. Others included a rationalist and a magician named PC Sarkar. The discussion was useless and extremely unbecoming ….of being associated with the sacred name of Sai. A major media storm against Swami seems to be brewing in India and elsewhere. I had been forewarned re the NDTV program by my friends in Parthi around Swami's b'day time itself. Prior to this, there was a very negative article by a well-known columnist named Vir Sanghvi in the Hindustan Times. After much thought, I decided to respond to the host of the show Ms. Barkha Dutt and to Swami Agnivesh, a vocal critic of Swami, purely in my personal capacity, using my rogers email id.Just wanted to share my response with you for purposes of information.

Sai RamKaruna

Please also read, Karuna's letter to Ms. Dutt and Swami Agnivesh

The Happy Feet – Happy ending does miracles

“The Happy Feet” is about a penguin which can not do the normal penguin thing – to sing nicely. But he has been gifted with a peculiar habit, of tapping his feet and dance along. Being not-so-liked person in the community, he is forced to being with himself and away from the lady penguin he likes. As with all the things in life where there are different communities following different ideas to lead different yet special lives, our protagonist gets to a community where dancing is “THE” thing. Finally he ends up saving their community from being extinct.

Such animated films, don’t need a very good story to get to the audience. Great animation, loveable characters and amazing voices are the most important things other than CREATIVITY. Each of these is present in plenty through out the film. The graphic work done in the movie is par excellence. Especially, the scenes involving the whale chase and the zoo scene are very well done.

The film leaves such a nice message: Let the other creatures in the food chain survive along with us. The extensive fishing done near the Antarctic’s is the cause for such intelligent creatures Penguins becoming extinct.

Vegetarianism is the way to lead life. During the investigation, Doug comes to know that there is a rather out of the world tool/mechanism, through which they shall be able to see what some one was doing in the past and change a bit of their actions in the past. Later he uses the same principle to save those 500-odd people killed.

Good things first – Denzel Washington is superb in the role. He fits himself so very easily into an intelligent yet arrogant, talkative yet precise and more importantly fact talking agent that you are bound to amaze at this actor’s capability. Denzel carries of the movie very easily and the way he describes the blast scenario and the cause of it at the starting it superb.

It is completely incomprehensible to even comprehend such an idea. Most part of the movie seems to be very childish – the scenes involving tracking a person using cameras way up in the sky simply map to Google Earth and its address location. Tony Scott gets into the details of the character and the filming so much that you will be surprised at the variation that he gets in the movie. The way the shots involving past and future have been taken leaves their mark on the viewer. The story could have more promptly written or scientifically done. All the scenes involving viewing someone else in the past, doesn’t make a lot of sense.

All in all, a movie well taken. A good watch if you like Denzel. But most things in this wonderful world, it could have been done in a better fashion.

Déjà vu – It’s an experience in illusion, very confusing one to say the least.

Music of Guru - A Maniratnam film ! Nawab Sultan (Abhishek) makes it to the brothel and they both fall in love. The love falls due to various misconceptions.

The saga of a courtesan retold again doesn't seem to be worth the way it has been told. The movies goes ahead with a snail pace, so much so that you plead for a break to recharge yourselves for the worst ahead just after just 20 minutes.

The story lacks pain from the way Umrao has been depicted. Aishwarya Rai doesn't have the capabilities of an actress required to play Umrao. Even though she cries when her love goes away, shouts when her love disowns her, there is one thing lacking - seriously - : The pain is not visible on the screen. With the beauty she carries, had she put in a little more effort, the movie could have been a lot lot better.

JP Dutta's screen play is bad with little for the watcher to guess ahead. Agreed the story has been told before, but to attach the movie to the audience today, it should have been a bit more fast and the screenplay a bit more tight.

In any movie based in a different period, the music plays a very significant role. The music doesn't seem to be fitting into the 19th century period. Anu Malik could have been better.
The only saving grace of the moving is Abhishek with his little cameo. Though his role is very limited, he gets the aura of a Nawab to the role which is very very required. Shabani Azmi does her best as the owner of the brothel.

You need not watch the movie even if someone pays your ticket. The way all the characters have been built in the movie shows the command of the director. Aamir, Sidharth & Atul Kulkarni are clearly the best performers in the movie.

Major Positives :
1. Blending of the past and present. (Editing was amazing - Getting the smooth transition of past and present is quite difficult and he has done with amazing ease)
2. MUSIC - Rahman clearly adds his value to the movie. Luka Chuppi is doubly wonderful on the screen!
3. Definitely not the last on the list, Aamir & Gang. They have been together all through the movie and have outperformed they roles.

I still wonder how Aamir has Okayed a movie where he shares the same screen time as the rest of the others !! NO OTHER STAR IN HINDI WOULD HAVE DONE SO!!

The story could have been presented a bit more nicely. My points:
1. I am really worried "HOW" any crime can be committed so easily. Minister without security is like Fedrer not being in form.
2. More could have been projected about the agitation all-over (if at all there was any ) after the death of these projected-revolutionaries.

Having watched Rang De Basanti after quite some days of its release, I must admit that this is one of the very few movies which made me - THINK!!

8/10 - Need to watch it again!!

Moments of Life (Part – I)

It was a cold night. He could sense the air biting him all over, right through his skin. And waiting outside a hostel where some of the beautiful females on the planet stay is such (not such) a huge task.

Rohit was standing in front of the hostel gate – counting every second as it passed by along with the chilly wind – for the huge clock to strike 12. Having been introduced to this girl through a common friend led him to take time, pause in other wise lazy life, to think about her. Having been a hard-core member and most time - leader - of oppose-girls-all-time group, Rohit didn’t expect that, that meeting would keep popping up his mind every other minute.

The memories of their first meet flashed as if they were introduced just half-an-hour ago.

“Hey Shri, How are you doing ? Long time no see, you busy with some thing important?” , Shreyas recognized Shri outside the chamber of a not-so-busy professor’s chamber,

“Good and No”, said Shri trying to be very un-girlish - to the point kinds.

“Shouldn’t it be Good and Bad rather than Good and No”, shouted Rohit, not realizing that it was a girl who said that.

Shri was caught off-guard. “What ? ”

“Oh! This is...This is ....Rohit my friend. We are doing a course on “Internet Security & Today’s Institutions under........He is.....”, the words that followed weren’t even heard by Rohit as he came face-to-face to this beautiful girl.

“Hi.....I think I have never been introduced to someone in such a bad way”, lending her hand forward to Rohit.

“Oh!Hi....I have never been either....Just to let you know - Had it not been for good amount of bad in this world, good would hardly been recognized.”, shot back Rohit.

“Woo...That’s a good one !! Anyways, I got to go now. Catch you guys later. Shreyas you are coming this Sunday right ?”, asked Shri while brushing her hair off her shoulder.

This was the moment for Rohit. He was struck with her beauty.

“Where?”, asked Shreyas.

As if some stroke of intelligence dawned on him he exclaimed “Ya, for your birthday party right....Ya, Count me in that evening!!”

“I shall count this good-bad Rohit as well! Get him too! Chal, C ya”. She waved and disappeared.

Once he made sure that there was no one in their vicinity, Rohit asked in just a whisper voice, “Shru, When is her birthday?”

“Hmm...Someone seems to be interested - It’s the day after !!” Shreyas smiled it through.

As the wind blew harder and the clock moved faster to 12'o clock, he asked a short girl who was passing into the hostel to call up “Shri of Room No 761".

Each second passing by was an age in itself.

“Will she come or will she not ? Would her friends allow her to go down at this point of time ? How would she be dressed” Strange yet very different thoughts continued to hit his mind. During all through these jam sessions in his brain, his hands made sure that his hair was properly set and the T-shirt was slightly over the Jean and the card he bought was hid behind his back.

At last, she arrived. Dressed in a black sweater and a blue jean, she couldn’t make it that it was Rohit who called her out.

He took the first few steps - very important steps - towards her slowly and said, “How are you doing ?”

“How would you think someone to be - when called outside in a chilly wind during a winter night? By the way did you call me ?...”, Shri was unstoppable.

“Happy Birthday”, said Rohit lending his hand forward along with the card.

“Wow!! Thanks!! I definitely didn’t expect this and from you, it was not even in my wildest dreams!! Thanks so much !!” Rohit said to himself, “Well done man, Go On!”

“I am impressed. What’s this ?”, while opening the card that just read:

“happy birthday to U”

Rohit made sure that “U” was the biggest letter and clearly the demarcation visible. “Oh...That’s so so sweeeettt! Thanks Rohit!” exclaimed Shri.
Remembering that she had to get back to her friends who were waiting just outside her room, she hurried, “Rohit, I got to go .....Friends you know...See you tomorrow at the cafeteria at 10, I hope you are free at that time.....Bye”. She again waved and again disappeared.

“How can someone fly off like that, How, How, How ? ”, he thought to himself all the time it took to get back to his room. He didn’t even care that he was all alone walking in the chilly night with nothing but a T-shirt on him. He was immersed in his thoughts. It even made him forget that he had actually passed his hostel main entrance. Conscience dawned on him and he made into the hostel through the other entrance. Tired mainly due to his long day and chilled due to the long walk, he fell asleep instantly as he lay on his bed.

Eternal Happiness

Its just an amazing feeling - eternal to be exact - when you enjoy a music piece - how ever small it might be. I amn’t sure if most people feel so, but I just love the feeling when I enjoy some piece of music. I have been hearing to some classic telugu movie songs, these songs are some of the best compositions that have been screened on the telugu movie screen. Though they have been composed by people who have not been born in The land of Telugu, the personalities behind the music are definitely among the top three people who have ever rendered music for telugu films. - Sri Illayraja and Sri K.V.Mahadevan.

Now coming to the songs that I have been enjoying so much -

The first one is Rama Kaavemeera by Sri SPB. This is a harikatha kind of song. Harikatha is a form of music which is (or should I say ‘was’, thanks to the modernization) very famous in Andhra Pradesh. This form of music is basically based out of very simple words with music which is all accessible to people in general with not much of knowledge of music required to enjoy that song. Many famous people have been such Harikatha renders. This song is from a classic “SWATHIMUTHYAM” by Sri Vishwanath, one of the very few directors who has made sure that his story telling is very neat, clean and more importantly where near to Teluguthaanam. The song basically explains the Swayamvara of Sri Rama. Sri SPB has made sure that there is no way a person listening to the song, miss seeing the Swayamvara him selves before himself - no matter what mood he is in. Such is the beauty with which he has sung that song. Add to it some really good lyrics by Sri Veturi ( I amn’t sure of this, so am assuming. Any mistake will be corrected in future). The way the lyricist and the singer have made sure that the audience don’t loose the essence of the song is commendable. Illayraja, needless to say the maestro, has given it the very Telugu touch. Though, this song is not that famous compared to the other songs of the movie, you should definitely listen to it to appreciate it. The lyricists has made sure that no point of the swaymvara goes off the hook. And the tender way in which Sri SPB has given the twists (I think they call it Aaarohana’s and Avaarohaana’s in the music terminologies) is out of the world. I really suggest this song to all the people who understand Telugu, who know that Sri Rama had married Sita in a swaymvara - that basically accounts to all the Telugu people.

The second one in Pranati Pranati sung by Sri SPB and Smt Vani Jayaram. This is a pure classic song based out of swaras etc. It is again from a classic of Sri Viswanath “SWATHIKIRANAM”. The song is sung by a character in the movie who is a highly acclaimed singer. Hence, the importance has been laid on the classical touch for the song by Sri K.V.Mahadevan. The singer basically is trying to do a vandanam (A Namaskar) to all the good beautiful things that the world has offered. Its that simple. But listen to the lyrics, I think most people would be amazed with the complex words been used to explain such simple idea. The use of “samaasalu” in the song is laudable. I have tried to put the three lines of the second stanza ( I am using this word because I amn’t sure if you say antra).

Pancha bhutamula pravishvangamuna prakruthi pondena padaspanda, aadhi kavana ma

Antragamula aalletheene sarvaanga sanchaalana khelaana, aa naatana ma

kanti tudaala harivinti pudaala taalukaandena saavarna lekhaana aadee chitraa ma

People who understand Telugu would definitely agree with me that these words penned by Sri Srivenella Sitrarama Sastry are really difficult to say leave alone singing them in a beat that is fast and classical. But Sri SPB has made sure there is nothing lost when you hear it. Also that his voice in the song should suite someone who really has a very deep tone like Sri Mammuty doesn’t make his job any easier. People who don’t know both the songs I have mentioned so far have been sung by Sri SPB, would definitely think that they are really by two different singers with very varied ways of singing. Such is the greatness of Sri SPB. There is an aaalap in between the above lines I have mentioned which is worth listening innumerable number of times.

The third song is again “Pranathi Pranathi” from the same movie. But this time is done alone by Smt Vanijayaram. Composing different tunes to the same lyrics would should be a difficult task because we ourselves can not say a sentence in two different tones easily. But Sri.K.V.Mahadevan has done it with ease. This song is sung by a 12-something guy who is a student at a renowned classical singer. And so he sings this song after he listens his master singing the same. When I heard this version of the song, I felt a strange thing - the vandaanam that the guru was doing (the song Sri SPB sung) had a bit of aham in it, which is absent in this version by the student. That gels well with the movie and you would appreciate this difference when you watch the movie. The greatness of Sri SPB comes to light again and again.

I am going to fall on his feet at the first chance I get to meet him. How can some one sing so many songs in different languages and for such a period of time would still remain a question not only to lesser mortals like me but also to the privileged ones who have been singing along with him. For people who don’t know the greatness of Sri SPB, his voice used to be the other name for music in Telugu music till not long ago. The songs are still ringing in my ears...and the happiness is ETERNAL.

ABSENCE

Well, it has been real long time since I blogged about something.

Sometimes the initial momentum of starting something new, doesn't last long vis-à-vis the winning stretch by the Indian cricket team (Pardon me all the cricket lovers, coz India is winning off-late quite comprehensively)

Shall be back soon. The festival marks the birth of Ganesha –the Lord who wards off all the bad things that come along in your life.

Being home for the festival after six years; that’s a long period- thanks to the hostel life for the graduate course and then, to the demanding corporates for the living :), was a great moment. The journey of 350 kms in a ‘luxury’ state transport co-operation bus (I am not naming the state wantedly) government bus in just under 6-hrs time was heavy on me. Though I was energetic about being at home for the festival, this tedious journey (if at all you could call it) took out most of the energy I had. Why else, would I doze off during those auspicious hours of early morning on bed even after instructing my brother(s) ( A close friend of mine was as well there) to get themselves ready for the Pooja? 1

All those days during childhood replayed themselves even after my selves being 20-something (Old is GOLD). Both mom and dad try to get their son up so that he could make himself tidy and clean enough so that the God Ganesha could at least see him on the auspcious day. One-hour of their hard work paid off at last, as I got up to take a oil-bath in a time – well that’s the good part – the time sufficient enough for a Michael Schumacher to stand on the podium after completing the race at his home F1 circuit. 2

After a lot of hula-bula about who to arrange what, finally the pooja started – my mind half into the kitchen of the things that I could have for lunch. Here I need to explain to refrain wrong interpretations - There is a reason for this, in India people don’t eat much (infact, they should not eat) till the time pooja is over. Then the Katha was told (the story about the importance of Vinayaka Chavithia and the importance of the GOD).

I would put in the story that was read – I really like it the same way, just the same way I liked it when I was 10-something.

Yudhistara, the eldest of the five Pandavas, during his tenure of serving the 13-year exile having lost the battle of dices (People, that’s why I say – DON’T PLAY GAMES THAT DEPEND ON YOUR LUCK, THEY COULD GET YOUR VERY LUCKY) goes to Sage Sutha for advice how to better his situation. The sage tells him that he should perform the Vinkaya Pooja so that all his bad-days become history. He also tells him, that Lord Krishna and Lord Rama had also performed the same during their difficult times – the former when the “Shamantaka” Mani (to put it simple – a diamond) and the latter during his exile from Ayodhya – to better their present.

That was the good part – the story – but the best part was about to come, the FOOD – a feast because it was a festival day. How could I be on a diet3 when I am blessed with nicely decorated mameede kaaya pappu (Simply, Mango Dal), rice with all other things made by mom. Just let my selves loose on the menu, so much so that it was really hard to stand my selves on my feet. But for my brother, I would have helped my selves to lie on the floor for the next few hours.

Off late4, any festival isn’t complete without watching a film of the biggest star in the region (read: A Chiru Film in Andhra and A Rajni starrer in Tamil Natta). Luckily, it was INDRA – the blockbuster and I treated my selves with the dance of Chiru and the tunes of Mani; all this my dad was struck in awe to come to terms with how could one be so energetic about a 50-something playing a character on the small screen – Well Dad, that’s what Chiru is all about.

I don’t want to make the saddest part even more dramatic – I returned home by an “Express” bus of the same state transport cooperation.

P.S: All the above was said so that it could make a good read, the truths are (wherever marked):
1. I usually sleep till the sun is still three-quarters away from his destination at west. And my ‘brother for-a-change’ didn’t follow what I said.
2. I usually bath very fast – even faster than Schumi completing his fast lap from a pole position.
3. The last thing I would want in life is to be on a diet – no matter if I touch the both sides of road by being at the center.
4. I amn’t sure how the festival was complete in the days of my granny’s when there was no television.

HOME - During 'those' days

Its always a mixture of feelings that I leave home with - either it has been going to college for the semester or going back to work place after the much-desired short break. There is very unique charisma about home - the bliss - all the nice things that mom cooks, all the 'nice' words that dad says when you do some of the 'best' things possible. Though everyone of us feel the same way as above, but hardly we have time for get to fulfill what we really like to do because of the highly demanding and extreme conditions that we work. How far would it be possible to do what we like (being at home for a good part of time) still remains a question to everyone though!

The moment I sit after a not-so hectic day at work (Thanks to Almighty) and think of what has been the best of my life till date – the answer comes out quick and fast – like a cricket ball out of Sehwag’s bat - its (read: undoubtedly) the days when I was a 10-15-something when the much of the pressures were restricted to get good marks in the UNIT TESTS (God, I love to use these words NOW) and the project-work(s). Had you been little lucky to attend all the classes and been just enough been attentive, that was not a big task. All the time during those days (yap, Years) parents used to tell me to study hard and concentrate on the studies. The spoilt brat I am, they didn’t find it useful to keep repeating the same thing and refrained themselves from being embarrassed.

I still am not able to comprehend why parents don’t understand and force their children to study, study and just STUDY – rather than encouraging them to adventure on the wings they have been blessed by LORD. It has been a case a decade ago (not so much with me as I said above – coz my parents knew long back that there is not much use in telling a stupid who is bent upon spoiling him selves) and still remains the same. Reading all the news about students killing themselves for just being not able to get good enough marks leads to me think – are these students products of best guys – best marks attitude society or are they are not being equipped with enough self confidence to take on the worst cases in world. Aren’t we (the system included) supposed to create the future people who are strong enough to take the failures they will face and learn from them and build better times for themselves?

The system involves – the parents, the teachers and all the other bodies involved with the students in general and the education system in particular. They have to answer this – aren’t we supposed to give the freedom a child deserves? Agreed, the freedom shouldn’t be at the hands of spoiling your kid, but should at least be given to the 10-15-something. Give out the time and the energy to the future people. Make your kids strong, bold and intelligent – let them be what they are – KIDS – so that they can as well write about their best times (read: being 10-15-something) in a far better way than this piece.

IQBAL - Dream Big, And Chase the Dream

IQBAL - a story of about a physically handicapped youngster whose SOLE (Read: desperate) aim in life is to play cricket for Indian team. His belief in himself and his never-give-up attitude towards his dream finally leads to his dream-come-true.

The story is set against the background of a middle class Indian village family (Exactly don't remember the state though). The beauty of an Indian village has been beautifully depicted on the celluloid. Nagesh Kuknoor gets across the message about the politics involved in Indian cricket, mixing it with the success of the dum-and-deaf 18-year old something.

The brilliance of the movie lies in the fact that the characters have been given all the due attention that they require and due to their performance on the screen. The characters of the GURU of IQBAL(played by Nasserudin Shah) leads us to believe that most things in the world can be changed. The best character of the movie though is the sister of IQBAL. She has just fitted to the character like "T". Also, the background score adds up to the movie depiction.

Nagesh has, hence, shown again that his so-lively way of narrating a story - the audience like in today's world.

IQBAL - A MUST WATCH FOR ALL THE MOVIE LOVERS!

The best dialog in the movie :
Nasserudin Shah : Allah tho bohut kuch booltaa hai, Mein Es Liye peeta hun, Taakee Allah joo boole mujhe sunaayee naa de (The LORD says many things, I drink so that I am not able to hear all that ! )
